Ayurveda practitioners—what you need to know

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is grounded in the idea of balance between the mind, body, and spirit. The practice was created in India in the 4th century BCE, and in Sanskrit, translates to “knowledge of life and longevity.”

Ayurveda aims to promote good health through practices such as diet, herbal remedies, massage, meditation, and yoga. It’s a holistic approach which treats the body and mind as a collective, with both being taken into account when treating physical complaints, and general health.

The philosophy of Ayurveda

Ayurvedic medicine focuses on five elements of nature: air, space, water, fire, and earth. When combined in the body, these elements create three doshas (components)—Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha—which relate to particular functions in the body. Ayurvedic medicine states that when a person’s doshas become imbalanced, they fall ill.

How is Ayurveda performed?

To cleanse the body and restore balance, Ayurveda uses a number of techniques. These include:

Herbal medicine

Ayurvedic medicine uses a number of herbs and spices that have science-backed health benefits, including ashwagandha, boswellia, triphala, brahmi, cumin, turmeric, licorice root, gotu kola, bitter melon, and cardamon.

Diet

The Ayurvedic diet promotes the health of your body and mind, and has been followed for thousands of years. The diet is based on the dosha which closely matches your personality and characteristics. For example, if you’re naturally creative, energetic, with a light frame, and a tendency to suffer from digestive issues or anxiety, you’re well-matched to the “Vatta” dosha, and your Ayurvedic diet will be focused on warm, moist, and grounding foods, with limited dried fruits, bitter herbs, and raw vegetables4.

Ayurveda massage (abhyanga)

Ayurveda massage uses traditional and non-traditional massage techniques, with the addition of herbal-infused essential oils. Physical benefits of Ayurvedic massage nourished skin, reduced muscle tension, and lymphatic drainage.

Yoga

Yoga is another centuries-old Indian practice that has a range of scientifically-proven health benefits. These include anxiety and stress reduction, improved heart health, reduced depression, inflammation reduction, and more.

Meditation and breathing exercises

Meditation has been practised for thousands of years, and has an incredible range of science-backed health benefits. These include anxiety and stress reduction, better self-awareness, improved emotional health, improved memory, and many more.

Panchakarma

Panchakarma is a detoxifying treatment that is meant to balance the doshas. It includes blood-letting, vomiting, and enemas.
